How many grasshoppers can my bearded dragon eat?
Bearded dragons will eat a lot of grasshoppers if they have the option to but they do need to be limited
my bearded dragon will get a variety of different bugs to eat throughout the week
I often feed my bearded dragon dubia roaches, worms and crickets
Make sure you do provide some variety to their diet because they are going to get sick of eating the same thing over and over
Now when a bearded dragon is a baby you’re going to want to feed them a lot more protein so i would give them more grasshoppers and crickets during the baby phase of their life
Now if you actually overfeed them protein you can tell by their poop

You can actually tell a lot about their health by looking at their poop
i know its not the most pleasing thing to do but it comes with the territory of owning a pet anyways so just get used to doing it
i check my bearded dragons poop every week (he’s an adult beardie so he only poops weekly at this point)
grasshoppers tend to be pretty big so your beardie isn’t going to eat that many of them
what i did in the beginning of my journey to getting to know more about bearded dragons was when i fed him something i fed him only that thing to see how much of it he will take before rejecting it
Now eventually he will just stop eating like we humans do when we are full
They will stop eating whatever is in front of them
So do some trial and error to see when your bearded dragon will stop eating grasshoppers
your beardie will eat other insects in much larger quantities though compared to grasshoppers
One thing you should take into consideration is when was the last time your fed your bearded dragon?
if it was a couple days ago he will obviously be more hungry than he was if you fed him yesterday
The best way like i said before is trial and error
Wild grasshoppers
Now this is a good question because many owners with think that because many bearded dragons are from the wild they can eat things from the wild
Technically yes they can eat them but if you want them to live a longer and healthier life you should avoid wild insects as food
Many insects in the wild are exposed to pesticides and other junk
You don’t know what other things those insects have eaten as well
when you purchase insects from the store or someone who breeds them and gut loads them you know you’re getting quality insects
This goes for Dubia roaches and crickets
some owners like to raise their own colonies of bugs to feed their reptiles with so they can save money as well
i have a friend who owns a few bearded dragons and she sets up dubia roach colonies in her house so that her beaded dragons always have some sort of protein
this saves her lots of money too.
i will see about making a blog post about that down the road because i know that will help some people out who are strapped for cash but want a bearded dragon badly
Other insects and bugs your bearded dragon can eat
Bearded dragons can eat many different types of insects
i personally feed my bearded dragon a lot of dubia roaches and crickets
here is a list of insects they can eat
- Dubia roaches
- crickets
- grasshoppers
- mealworms
- superworms
- waxworms
- silkworms
Many worms will have a high fat content to them as well so try to keep those for more like a treat
